MUD WTR

About MUD WTR

MUD\WTR was founded in 2018 by Shane Heath in Santa Monica, California, after Heath decided to step back from his daily coffee habit and find an alternative that supported focus and energy without the anxiety, jitters, and cortisol spikes he associated with high-caffeine consumption. The product he built—a blend of organic mushrooms, masala chai spices, cacao, and black tea—contains approximately 1/7th the caffeine of a standard cup of coffee (around 35mg per serving) while delivering a complex, earthy, chai-inspired flavor that has converted an enormous number of daily coffee drinkers into consistent users. The brand's provocative name, distinctive packaging, and founder-driven authenticity quickly established it as one of the most recognizable functional beverage brands in North America. The core MUD\WTR :rise blend contains Lion's Mane (cognitive support; hericenones and erinacines stimulate nerve growth factor synthesis), Chaga (antioxidant density and immune modulation from birch-grown material), Reishi (stress adaptation and sleep quality support from ganoderic acid triterpenes), and Cordyceps (energy and oxygen utilization for physical performance), alongside organic cacao, turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, black pepper, and a modest amount of black tea for the caffeine fraction. All mushrooms are certified organic; the overall blend is Non-GMO verified, vegan, and gluten-free. The masala chai flavor architecture—rather than a clinical mushroom powder taste—is a significant part of why MUD\WTR succeeds where many mushroom powders fail at building daily habits. The product line has expanded thoughtfully since launch to cover different moments of the day. The :rise blend (original, morning focus and energy) is joined by a :rest blend (evening wind-down with Reishi, Turkey Tail, and ashwagandha), and a caffeine-free :rise cacao option. The brand also offers a :creamer (coconut milk powder and MCT oil for fat-soluble compound absorption), a handheld frother, and a ritual starter kit designed to make the onboarding experience intentional and gift-worthy. This systems approach—not just a product but a full morning ritual kit—has driven strong customer lifetime value. MUD\WTR is certified B Corp, meeting independent standards for environmental practices, employee welfare, and social impact. The company has been transparent about sourcing and manufacturing throughout its growth, and its B Corp status reflects genuine operational commitments rather than marketing positioning. They have partnered with 1% for the Planet and have published detailed supplier sourcing documentation publicly. The brand grew primarily through direct-to-consumer subscription, powered by compelling video content, podcast advertising (Joe Rogan was an early advocate who drove massive initial awareness), and strong word-of-mouth from a community of what the brand calls MUD\WTR converts—people who've genuinely reduced or eliminated daily coffee in favor of the blend. With a 25% subscription discount and a product that most users describe as the ritual they didn't know they needed, MUD\WTR has built one of the most loyal customer bases in the functional beverage category. For consumers seeking to moderate caffeine intake while maintaining a meaningful morning ritual and incorporating daily mushroom nutrition, MUD\WTR occupies a category of its own.
