Four Sigmatic Review โ Is the OG Mushroom Coffee Brand Still Worth It?
Board-Certified Physician ยท Published 2026-04-23
Four Sigmatic is the category's OG and it still holds up. Lion's Mane dosing is higher than any mainstream competitor at 500mg per packet (Focus blend), dual extraction is legitimately important for bioavailability, and the single-serve packets fit travel better than tubs of ground powder. But the flavor is earthier than RYZE or MUD\WTR, and their product line has sprawled to the point where picking the right SKU is harder than it should be.
Pros
- + Highest Lion's Mane dose per serving in mainstream mushroom coffee (500mg in Focus)
- + Dual-extraction (water + alcohol) genuinely affects bioavailability
- + Single-serve packets โ best format for travel, office, portion control
- + USDA Organic, third-party tested
- + Founded 2012 โ longest track record in the category
Cons
- โ Flavor is earthier and more acquired-taste than RYZE or MUD\WTR
- โ Product catalog is sprawling โ Focus, Think, Original, Adaptogen, Defend, Chill โ hard to choose
- โ Packet format generates more packaging waste than tubs
- โ Individual packet pricing is high vs bulk subscription competitors
Full review
Four Sigmatic launched mushroom coffee into the mainstream in 2012 out of Finland โ founder Tero Isokauppila is a 13th-generation Finnish forager. The brand predates RYZE by almost a decade and predates MUD\WTR by six years. Everything you'd recognize as 'the mushroom coffee category' descended from what Four Sigmatic built.
The product moat is dual extraction. Most beneficial mushroom compounds โ beta-glucans, triterpenes โ are locked behind chitin cell walls and need both water (for beta-glucans) and alcohol (for triterpenes) extraction to become bioavailable. Four Sigmatic extracts both. Cheaper brands use water-only extraction or, worse, raw mycelium-on-grain powder with no extraction at all.
Focus Coffee is the SKU most people should start with: Arabica + 500mg Lion's Mane + 250mg Chaga per packet. 500mg Lion's Mane is close enough to the 750-1000mg/day Saitsu et al. used in their 12-week trial that you're actually in clinical-dose territory โ which you are not with RYZE or MUD\WTR.
Flavor is honest. It tastes like mushrooms. Less so than the old Original blend (which was polarizing), but more so than RYZE's Arabica-led base or MUD\WTR's cacao-forward :Rise. If you want 'coffee you barely notice has mushrooms in it,' Focus isn't it. If you want 'actually functional ingredients with a clinical-ish dose,' it's the move.
The catalog is the real friction. Focus, Think, Original, Adaptogen Coffee, Defend, Chill, Golden Latte, Matcha โ plus proteins and skincare. Decision paralysis is real. For mushroom coffee, start with Focus or Think. Ignore the rest until you've tried those.
