MUD\WTR Review โ Is :Rise Cacao Actually Worth $40 a Bag?
Board-Certified Physician ยท Published 2026-04-23
MUD\WTR's :Rise Cacao is the cacao-forward choice for people who don't actually like coffee. The 4-mushroom blend (Lion's Mane, Cordyceps, Chaga, Reishi) is solid, the cacao masks mushroom earthiness, and the 35mg caffeine (versus 95mg+ in regular coffee) is a genuine middle ground. But it's the most expensive mainstream option and the dosing is light if you care about clinical research thresholds.
Pros
- + Cacao base is genuinely tasty โ best option for people who don't love coffee flavor
- + 35mg caffeine (from masala chai tea) โ far below regular coffee
- + Lion's Mane + Cordyceps + Chaga + Reishi โ solid functional stack
- + Organic, non-GMO, kosher, gluten-free
- + Multiple blends โ :Rise (morning), :Balance (daytime), :Rest (evening)
Cons
- โ Most expensive mainstream mushroom coffee โ ~$1.66/serving at full price
- โ Mushroom dosing per species is light (~250mg each)
- โ Some users find the chai/cacao flavor too polarizing
- โ Starter Kit upsell pressure at checkout can feel pushy

MUD\WTR shipped its first bag in 2018 out of Venice, CA with a loud 'coffee is bad, try this instead' marketing stance. Seven years in, that stance has softened โ their latest copy says 'less caffeine' not 'caffeine-free' โ and the product has genuinely improved. :Rise Cacao is the flagship and is where most new customers start.
The 4-mushroom blend (Lion's Mane, Cordyceps, Chaga, Reishi) is fewer species than RYZE's Super6, but each of the four are the research-heavy headliners. The cacao base โ not just cacao-flavored, but actual cacao โ gives :Rise a chocolate-malt flavor that masks mushroom earthiness better than any competing blend.
Caffeine: 35mg per serving, derived from masala chai tea. That's roughly a third of regular coffee. For sensitive sleepers or people cutting back, that's the main selling point. For heavy coffee drinkers, it'll feel underpowered and you'll notice.
Price is the real friction. At $40/bag with 30 servings, that's $1.33/serving on subscription and $1.66/serving retail. RYZE retails slightly lower; Four Sigmatic's instant packets cost less per serving. If budget is a priority, MUD\WTR is hard to justify. If cacao taste and the 'ritual' are priorities, it's worth it.
Third-party testing is disclosed but not as actively surfaced as RYZE's. Sourcing is organic fruiting-body material. No red flags on heavy metals or potency in the batches we've reviewed.
